Endodontics

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry dealing with root canal treatment.

WHY IS ENDODONTICS NECESSARY?

Endodontic treatment is necessary in the case of advanced untreated caries causing the inflammation of the tooth nerve, accompanied by acute pain which makes you visit your dentist immediately. If the tooth is not treated at this stage and the condition is only masked by painkillers, the area will be contaminated by bacteria, causing an even more complicated condition called gangrene. This condition is accompanied by acute pain and often by a swelling, in which case complicated treatment protocols are required.

Endodontic treatment is sometimes necessary when prosthetic restorations (crowns and bridges) are planned, as a part of the preparation for these procedures.

The root canal is filled with biocompatible materials, enabling the tooth to be functional for many years after the restoration of the dental crown.

Owing to endodontic treatment, the tooth in question does not have to be extracted, thus prolonging its life and avoiding some complicated procedures, which are otherwise necessary after extraction in order to restore the tooth.
